Final Pull

In early 2010, organizers of the local tractor pulling group came to see if they could use our lot on the south side of the McIntire Elevator. They had been using main street.

The event was gaining momentum and had an enthusiastic following. However, the incompatibility of 800 hp tractors, billowing smoke at 100 decibels, spinning tires at speeds up to 35 mph, and pulling a weighted sled through a residential neighborhood, was obvious.

As they wanted to keep the pull McIntire based while avoiding future backlash, our lot was the answer. We allowed them to install permanent features; with the understanding they would have at least several years of use. The track ran parallel to Walnut Ave. The space between the highway and track made for a natural viewing area. We had ample parking for truck/trailer rigs loaded with tractors. A fifth of Patron per year rent was in their budget.

The group started with a once a year Father’s Day pull, later adding a mid-August date due to puller demand. This event's popularity has grown over the years. We are honored to have had a role. So, when the day came that we needed the lot to accommodate our growth, we were concerned the goodwill of a mutually beneficial fifteen-year arrangement might be lost. To soften the blow, we offered an alternate location, less ideal but feasible, nonetheless.

Current leaders of McIntire Pullers Inc., Tom Shimek, Audrey and Dale McCarthy, Kim and Joe Schechinger, and Cole Kruse were understanding when we notified them this spring. '25 would be the last year at the present location. We promised to do what we could to help find a new home near McIntire.

The final pull at the Walnut Ave track was this weekend. It was well attended. Weather was pleasant. As this chapter closes, two insights become clear. One, I am stunned at the speed at which life passes. Two, despite what the guys at MPI believe, Pinicon Farm was the luckier member of this partnership. Contributing to the success of a highly visible, community centered activity is immensely gratifying. Hopefully, we find more outlets for our altruistic ambition.
